MARTIN ROBERTSON MEMORIAL AWARD

United Way established the Martin Robertson Memorial Award award in 1996 in honor of Robertson’s services to Hancock County. It honors the person, company or employee group whose contribution to United Way helped improve the lives of Hancock County residents. This year United Way decided to honor Thelma Robertson, Martin’s widow, for her many contributions to Hancock County and United Way. The honor took Thelma by complete surprise. “I didn’t do anything to earn this award,” Thelma said after receiving the award. A quick review of the many activities in which she volunteers her time shows how much she deserves the award. At 94 years of age, Robertson remains visible in the community, helped with the reading program at North Hancock Elementary, attends and participates in the annual Farm City and Hancock County Chamber of Commerce annual dinners, and even mows her own grass each summer. Not enough space exists to list all of her contributions to United Way and Hancock County. Thelma’s family surprised her by attending the breakfast, and helping honor her when she received the award.
